Use this information as clues, not facts!
Very little of the information in my database is based on primary sources. Some of the secondary sources have been somewhat verified by comparing them with other secondary sources, but many others have not. Some are, in my opinion, very reliable, but others are iffy.
There is a lot of bogus information on the Internet! Most people posting genealogical information are well-meaning. But an innocent mistake is still a mistake. And once an error is “out there” it is reproduced again and again. This is one of the many reasons it is important to understand the sources you use.
Alas, I know there are errors in the information I have! I eliminate the really obvious problems, like women giving birth at age 90 or age 4, people getting married after their own deaths, children born before their parents were born, etc. I’m constantly amazed at how many people just don’t do the math.
One reason I have posted my information, flaws and all, is that it helps me find corrections. Friendly people who have better source material contact me on a regular basis to let me know what needs fixing. In the meantime, I am also working to verify my information from as many sources as possible. (The National Genealogical Society promotes standards to which we should all aspire.)
Sometimes this means I have to “lose” a few relatives, who turn out not be be my relatives at all. Sometimes it means I gain some more interesting cousins. Sometimes it means a relationship changes — someone who seemed to be a direct ancestor might turn out to be a distant cousin instead, a relative might prove to be an in-law, or the guy I thought was someone’s father might really be his uncle.
So I’ll say it again, because it can’t be said too much. These are clues, not facts. Verify as much as you can. Let me know if you find a mistake. And above all, try to relax and have fun with it.
